“It’s like Christmas,” said one client when Gellibrand visited the amazing Lightscape exhibition at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens on the night of Thursday 3 August. It’s the second year the Gardens have hosted the exhibition, a huge display of lights big and small, and stunning light-based artworks.

More than twenty-five Gellibrand clients and their Support Workers gathered in the cool air outside the gates and there was a hum of anticipation as the sun began to set. Once inside there were smiles and looks of amazement all round as clients took in the sights and sounds.

“I like all the beautiful lights everywhere,” a client said as, on the pond in the centre of the Gardens, a water spray light show shone like fireworks against the city skyline. Coupled with synthesizer music, the multi-coloured display held clients spellbound.

Lightscape’s exhibition trail through the Gardens is almost two kilometres long so clients had plenty of time to enjoy some exercise, catch ups, and hot food and drinks as they learnt about the artworks and listened to the accompanying music. As well as the ‘firework’ water show, other highlights of this immersive sensory experience were the line of fluoro-coloured tree trunks and the majestic ‘Winter Cathedral’, a stunning corridor of bright lights that captivated clients.

The brainchild of Customer Wellbeing Manager Margaret Given, Lightscape was a night to remember. Special thanks to Ri-An Pineda who organised the event; the ISP coordinators led by Anuj Malik; the Resource Team; Service Managers; and all the Support Workers who helped out on the night. And, of course, thanks to Gellibrand clients who are always willing to try out and enjoy new adventures.
