Gellibrand marked 3 December’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a Fun Day of food, music, and activities at our Albert Street Community Space in Sebastopol.

African drumming set the beat at the day’s outset, with the facilitator giving every client who wanted to participate their own drum to tap and thump on. It was a wonderful sensory experience for clients under the outdoor tents and it got them in the mood – that included some dancing – for a day of fun.

After that, it was time to head inside for an early lunch before going back outside under the tents to listen to a musician play country and classic hits. Clients recognised some of the tunes and enjoyed a chance to chip in and sing along.

While the musician was cranking out the melodies, the reptile encounter team showed up and clients had the chance to get up close and personal with a range of snakes and lizards – and even baby crocodiles. It was a terrific opportunity for clients to have a nature-based sensory experience, and clients Melanie Lewindon and Stephen Cauchi didn’t want to do anything else for the day!

That said, along with all clients, they did find their way to the ice-cream truck; clients – and team members – swamped it when it arrived. One serving wasn’t enough of the many flavours on offer, with two to three helpings standard for most clients! In fact, Gellibrand managed to eat all the truck had brought along.

It was a great to use our new Sebastopol base for the event, and clients said they enjoyed the different activities in which they could engage and have some fun. Thanks to the Wellbeing Team for organising the day, and all team members who attended and provided supports.
