Find out about this year’s Biggest Morning Tea event, a special day on Gellibrand’s calendar.

It was the first day of winter – and the weather let us know – but it didn’t stop the Gellibrand community from gathering at Mary Burbidge Hub for our annual Biggest Morning Tea event to raise money – at time of writing close to $3000 – for the Cancer Council.

The fun at this year’s event began even before people entered the Hub; a petting zoo was set up in the car park. Ducks, chickens, piglets, rabbits, guinea pigs, and goats were all ready for adults and kids alike to cuddle them. While client Patrick said he’d only visit if there were dogs, he eventually spent some time with the animals.

“I like the morning tea,” he added, munching on chocolate cake and enjoying a soft drink.

Client Chantelle said the best part of the day was the raffle. She’d bought six tickets and was clear on how she wanted the results to unfold.

“I want to win the whole thing,” she laughed. It can be reported that Chantelle did indeed win a couple of prizes when the raffle was drawn.

Gellibrand again this year owes a big thanks to Ann McGowan for organising a vast array of fund-raising raffle prizes, including art works, food and drink hampers, kids and adults’ clothing, calendars, a Bluetooth speaker, a TV subscriber pack, and craft works.

Client Zenny was beaming and proud to win two prizes and many other clients were excited to collect their prizes when their names were called out as happy winners. It was client Derryn’s birthday and she felt like the Biggest Morning Tea was an extension of her celebration. She said she was having a fun morning and was keen to hear her name announced as a raffle winner.

“I want to win a shirt,” she said, while client Bernie, enjoying a donut and a sandwich, said she “liked all the people coming together.” Her friend and fellow Gellibrand client Helen said she just enjoyed being out and about.

Flowers of Sunshine donated flowers to brighten up our event, while Cupcakes by Paolo and Routleys both donated to Gellibrand a literal smorgasbord of sandwiches and cakes, all of which our clients, team members, family, and supporters enjoyed. As people got some energy from all the food and cups of tea, it came time for dancing, with client Dale leading the way.

We would also like to thank Sun Theatre for their donation of tickets to the Sun Theatre Yarraville. We’re glad to report that all businesses that supported this wonderful cause last year returned this year to provide their support. There is not enough we can do to thank them for their generosity.

The Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea holds a special place in Gellibrand’s heart. As well as being a great way to bring our community together and raise money to help cancer research and support, it’s a day when we honour the late Mary Burbidge, one of our founders and biggest supporters, who died of cancer in 2022.

Gellibrand thanks everyone for coming and making our Biggest Morning Tea a success. A special thanks to team member Ian Druce for all his hard work in organising and promoting this year’s event, along with all team members who provided supports on the day.
